Big Hearts and Big Smiles are what your local
Firefighters have when it comes to serving both City and County citizens
of Sanford and Lee County by either area County Volunteer and a City
Paid Firefighter. When it comes to the time of need, it is hard to stop
the desire of wanting to come to the aid of people when needed. On the
evening of February 05, 2007 during the 31st Annual N.C. Fire and Life
Safety Education Conference held at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville,
N.C., the Lee County Chapter of the Firefighters' Burned Children Fund
won for the third year in a row the "Traveling Fire Bucket Award"
awarded by the NC Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill. This award is the
highest award presented to a fire department or group of firefighters
that makes the largest donation and support to the NC Jaycee Burn Center
per Population Capita. The award was presented to President David L.
Nance (Northwest Pocket & Sanford Fire Departments) by Ernest Grant of
the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center - UNC Health Care in Chapel Hill. Other
members in attendance that packed the stage were Vice President Frank
Layton (Carolina Trace & Sanford FD), Secretary-Treasurer Charla Nance
(Northwest Pocket FD), Jennifer Nance (Northwest Pocket FD), Heather
Lineberry (Tramway FD and Sanford FD), Michael Thomas (Cape Fear FD and
Sanford FD), Lisa Matthews (Cape Fear FD and Sanford FD), Tracey Watson
(Sanford FD), and Jess Fearon (Lemon Springs FD). Others in attendance
were Assistant Lee County Fire Marshal Bill Rogers, Rebecca Nance and
Toye Layton.During the award presentation Ernest Grant (with a
chuckle) asked, "David if all of you are here, who is protecting
Sanford?" Nance replied, "well Lee County is small but this is a very
small portion of the wonderful Firefighters we have back in Sanford and
Lee County."
"Home - Sweet - Home", Nance advised, is what was
shouted across the room filled with some 300 in attendance of this
Banquet.President David Nance advised that the Lee County
Firefighters' Burned Children Fund, made up of firefighters from Sanford
and Lee County Departments, is one of the 15 chapters of the
Firefighters' Burned Children Fund Inc. across the state. The Lee County
Chapter supports the NC Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill N.C. in many
ways including funding, donations and volunteering for different events,
such as their annual Burn Camp "Camp Celebrate". 2006 celebrated the
25th Anniversary of Camp Celebrate. At Camp Celebrate, held last year at
Victory Junction in Randleman, NC, we had about 11 members headed up by
Jerry and Kay Holt, David, Charla, Jennifer, and Rebecca Nance, Dana and
Jeanene Elliott, Leslie Stone, and John and Terri McKone. All attend the
opening day in July, cooking hamburgers and hotdogs for the 400 plus
campers, families, camp volunteers and staff. While everyone was eating
and enjoying meeting everyone, Tim Hair of Sanford, the "Tim McGraw look
a-like", entertained the large crowd singing a large selection of music
along with picture taking and autographs with the kids. Eddie Nance, aka
"Cheezo the Clown", attended opening camp ceremonies and performed
clowning and balloon tying for the kids at the fire truck line up during
registration. "Cheezo" arrived at Camp with Miss North Carolina on an
antique fire truck along with over 40 fire trucks from across North
Carolina. Each fire truck brought kids to camp and "Cheezo" continue to
entertain the kids after reaching the camp at Victory Junction. Lee
County Chapter and the Mooresville Chapter of the FFBCF combined funds
to bring two special guests from South Africa to be an important part of
Camp Celebrate. They spent all week at camp, visited local fire stations
and returned home to Johannesburg, South Africa to take back ideas to
share with their burned children. Both Tramway FD and Northwest Pocket
FD sent apparatus to the Opening Parade for the burn camp. Riding on a
fire truck into camp was another life time experience that many of these
kids will never again be able to do. We provided several events such as
the inflatable slide and moon walk, t-shirts, and several other items as
well volunteering for the camp. We love helping both kids and adults
that are burn survivors as well the Burn Center. At Christmas we
collected two pickup loads of assorted toys, games, dolls, and teddy
bears from the 3-Alarm Toy Drive held each year at the City of Sanford
Fire Department. Wal-mart Gift Cards, Gas Cards, Phone Cards, a Dell
Laptop Computer with carrying case, Digital Camera, TV and ceiling mount
system, and training aids were also provided. Local toy maker and wood
worker James Annis of Sanford, provided assorted hand made wooden toys
and much more.
We had to return the bucket to the Burn Center during our visit at Christmas in
2006. Nance advised that we only get to keep it for a year. From the time we
returned that bucket at Christmas all the way up to the minute that the
Traveling Fire Bucket was awarded, no one knew this year's winner. After winning it now for three years in a row, we
get to keep it forever. It will now remain in Sanford and Lee County
for good and will be kept proudly at Sanford Central Fire Station.
However, we would not be able to do what we do if
the citizens of Sanford and Lee County did not support us though tax
deductible donations, playing in our golf tournaments or donating their
aluminum beverage cans at local fire stations. We are very thankful for
the following fire departments who provide aluminum can drop off
location around Sanford and Lee County:
Nance also advised that we again worked really hard to get this award. It was
our goal to double the $10,000.00 amount given in 2005. Our total for 2006 was a
little over $21,000.00.If any citizen, company or business group has
questions or is interested in supporting our organization by making
donations or matching funds raised for the Burn Center, you can contact
David Nance at 919-776-5642. We are a 501-3C non profit tax deductible
group. It is our goal to continue supporting the Burn Center, Burn Camps
and also our local community as we always have when needed. Burn
Prevention and Education and aiding the survivors is what we are about.
Please remember that we have had children, youth and adults here in
Sanford and Lee County that have been treated at the Burn Center.
Cabarrus County, Charlotte, Landis, Lee County,
Union County, and Wake County Chapters of the Firefighters’ Burned
Children Fund, Inc. received a Special Recognition Award given by The
North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center. This award is given annually to a
select few organizations for all the hard work, contributions, and
continued support of the Burn Center. |
